Resonating his thoughts on the occasion, Sourav Roy, CEO, Tata Steel Foundation, said, “Sahiyyas have been an integral part of the impactful decade of implementing MANSI+ across the three districts of Jharkhand, which have now achieved saturation levels. They are the first healthcare access points for the last mile person and have contributed immensely to lower the NMR and MMR, along with their network of other frontline healthcare practitioners. Over the past year MANSI has seen various innovations, one of them, are the three Prasuti Pratikshalays across the three districts, which will further help sahiyyas to bridge the gap between quality healthcare and the last mile person. The Sahiyya Sammelans are organised each year across the country, and we have been fortunate to be a part of this occasion, where we get to thank the sahiyyas in person and acknowledge their year-round efforts.”
The event featured a dialogue on the importance of healthcare led by Bace Buriuly, District Coordinator of MANSI, where Amit Kumar, Head, Community Health Cluster, Tata Steel Foundation, highlighted the decadal journey of MANSI+. The recognition of Sahiyyas and the presentation of awards were carried out by Azmat Azeem, District Programme Coordinator, West Singhbhum who was also present at the occasion. (Read below also)
In reflection of Tata Steel Foundation’s commitment to healthcare advancement, MANSI+ has strategically evolved as a life-cycle-based approach to reduce maternal and child mortality across the Kolhan region in Jharkhand. As of 2024, a dedicated team of more than 6,000 sahiyyas, supported by over 250 MANSI field workers, actively engages with every adolescent individual, focussing on girls, newly married couples, pregnant mothers, and families of new-borns to inculcate a sense of health-seeking behaviour. The impact of MANSI+ across the decade have made it a replicable model, which is now being adapted across other districts and states to ensure an overall reduction of MMR and NMR. The role of sahiyyas extend beyond immediate intervention, to regular awareness workshops and counselling sessions.
