Jamshedpur: The groundbreaking ceremony of Tinplate Company of India Limited (TCIL)’s expansion project worth Rs.2000 crores was performed by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday in the company premises here.
TCIL is all set for expansion from 0.415 MnTPA to 0.715 MnTPA in the first phase by 2026 at Jamshedpur.
Jharkhand Ministers Champai Soren, and Banna Gupta, host of MLAs,T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, R N Murthy, TCIL Managing Director and other senior officials of state government, East Singhbhum district administration and Tata group companies, among others, were present on the occaion.
Soren said various investors have shown interest in investing in mineral-rich state since a new industrial policy was released about two years ago.
TCIL was one of them and had signed a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard and today the groundbreaking ceremony of it is being performed.
Direct employment opportunity for 1000 youths would be generated while 5000 indirectly following the completion of the project, he said.
Lauding the role of Tata Group’s contribution in the growth of Jharkhand, Soren said a cancer hospital of Tata’s was ready for inauguration soon in Ranchi while the company also proposed to set up Taj hotel in the steel city.
Apart of abundance of mineral deposite, the chief minister also has plenty of opportunities for the growth of tourism sector.
Chief Minister assured that his government would extend all possible assistance and suggested TCIL to complete the project within timeframe.
Soren said his government promote industries in the state to improve the standard of living of the masses of the state.
Tata Steel CEO and Managing Director T V Narendran said TCIL, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, expansion project was important for the company.
The project Rs.2000 crores in the first phase will complete by 2026, he said.
The company’s production is ncreasing, demand of steel witness uptrend and the demand of packaging steel also increased.
It is the right time to increase the capacities of our downstream facilities including TCIL, Tata Steel MD said.
Tata Group’s has over 100 years of relationship with Jharkhand and the Group has end to end operation in the state, he said adding that Tata’s have been mining coal and iron-ore, producing steel and also have auto manufacturing facility, besides downstream companies.
Narendran assured that the partnership and investment in the state would continue.
In his welcome address, R N Murthy, Managing Director of TCIL said: “ This expansion is a significant milestone in the company’s growth and commitment to the state. We are committed to partnering with the Jharkhand government and local communities to promote economic and social development of the region.”
Established in 1920, TCIL began its manufacturing journey with Hot Dipped Tinplate in 1922, followed by the manufacturing of Electrolytic Tinplate in 1979 and Cold Rolling Mill operations in 1996. In 2012, TCIL’s capacity was enhanced to 0.38 MnTPA for producing Tinplate Material & Tin Free Steel, along with lacquered and printed sheets.
Having completed 100 years in 2020, TCIL has embarked on its next journey towards sustainability and growth. Currently, its capacity stands at 0.415 MnTPA. First phase of expansion project, which involves an investment of around Rs 2000 crores, will ensure additional capacity of 0.30 MnTPA, leading to a total capacity of 0.715 MnTPA by the year 2026.
The upcoming facilities will have state-of-the art technology and higher levels of automation to cater to domestic and export markets, minimize man-machine interface, enhance safety aspects and designed to meet the EU environmental norms.
