Jamshedpur: Notorious criminal and a close aide of gangster Akhilesh Singh was arrested with arm and ammunition, a senior police officer today said.
The arrest was made on the basis of the lead provided by a criminal Ansu Chauhan, who was arrested by police on 28th January last.
Ansu along with his friends including Bunty Singh alias Polu of Jugsalai, Ashish Tiwari of Bagbeda, Babu Tiwari of Sidgora, Rahul and others had come to the local court in bail related issue but he made an abortive attempt to escape during body search at Gate No.4.
Police, however, had caught Ansu and recovered a country-made pistol with seven live cartridges, Senior Superintendent of Police, Prabhat Kumar told newsmen at a press conference.
In course of interrogation, Ansu had told police that the pistol belonged to Bagbeda-resident Kanhaiya Singh, a shooter .
Ansu’s friends were absconding ever since he was arrested.
Based on information, Kumar said a police raid team led by Superintendent of Police (City) K Vijay Shankar was formed to apprehend the accused on the run.
The raid team with the help of technical cell of police department arrested Kanhaiya Singh, who was wanted by police in 20 criminal cases including murder, extortion, gang waret, SSP said.
Though police said Kanhaiya Singh was arrested with arm from his Bagbeda home here but report making round the city that he was arrested from Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) and brought here last night.
Meanwhile, a police team led by Vijay Shankar paraded Kanhaiya Singh on the busy streets of Sakchi to dispel fear of criminals among the residents.
SSP said Kanhaiya, who was a convict in a case, was out on parole.
