Seraikela (Jharkhand): A peddler with over half kg of contraband and cash was arrested by Chowka police in Chandil Sub-division of Seraikela-Kharswan district on Thursday.
The arrest was made following a tip off about a man carrying the contraband on his motorcycle on national highway 33, police said.
Addressing a press conference, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sanjay Singh said the Officer-in-Charge of Chowka police station Dharmaraj Kumar had an information that a Jamshedpur-based peddler was carrying 700 grams of opium towards Bhuiyandih-Tamar on NH 33.
A police team on the directive of SDPO was formed to launch vehicle checking drive when the team intercepted the peddler near a diversion close to Deerlaung road, police officer said adding that the peddler wanted to flee but was caught following a chase.
On verification, police recovered the drug, Rs.2.49 lakh cash and a mobile phone from his possession.
The peddler was identified as Sujit Kumar Sahu, a resident of Carriage Colony under Burmamines police station of Jamshedpur, SDPO said.
The accused was forwarded to jail after a case was registered under relevant sections of NDPS Act, Singh added.
Soon after taking the charge of the district recently, Superintendent of Police Rishabh Jha had warned the drug peddlers, people engaged in illegal activities including mining to mend their ways or face the consequences.
