Jamshedpur, : Promoting Sustainable Development, the 7th edition of Tata Steel Jamshedpur Run-a-thon 2022 kicked-off at JRD Tata Sports Complex today. Avneesh Gupta, Vice President TQM and Engineering & Projects, Tata Steel, D B Sundara Ramam Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel, Atrayee Sanyal, Vice President (Human Resource Management), Tata Steel, Prabhat Kumar, Principal Executive Officer, Tata Steel, Ujjal Chakraborti, Managing Director, Jamshedpur Continuous Annealing & Processing Company Private Limited (JCAPCPL), Farzan R Heerjee, Chief Protocol & Sports, Tata Steel, Mukul Choudhary, Chief Sports Excellence Centres, TFA and Sports, Tata Steel and CEO, Jamshedpur Football Club along with Shailesh Kumar Singh, Deputy President, Tata Workers’ Union (TWU) and Satish Kumar Singh, General Secretary, TWU and Prabhat Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (East Singhbhum) graced the occasion with their presence.
Over 4,000 people participated in the run across three competition categories – 10-KM, 7-KM & 5-KM and newly introduced non-competitive 2-KM Fun Run. The run-a-thon witnessed participation from 17 states, namely, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
This year, the company will plant one sapling for each registered participant to promote sustainability. Moreover the run used goodie bags made of paper along with branding and promotion materials made of bio-fabric. Plastic water bottles used during the run will be recycled and reused in making sustainable roads.
Jamshedpur Run-a-thon is a corporate event of Tata Steel which is organised every year to instil the sense of fitness among the citizens of Jamshedpur. The physical event was organised after a gap of two years on the theme “Fitness is Fun, Just Run!”
While the 10-KM and 7-KM had an age limit of 19 years and above, the 5-KM category was open to children and adults aged 16 to 19 years. The 10-KM is the internationally approved distance for road races by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The Jamshedpur Run-a-thon 2022 were organised under the aegis of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) with able support from professionals and domain experts.
The last physical edition of the Jamshedpur Run-a-thon was organised in 2019, wherein more than 4500 participated. In 2020 and 2021, the virtual format of the Run-a-thon was organised to ensure continuity and keep the running community engaged. The virtual runs witnessed participation of more than 3000 people in both the virtual editions.
Encouragement and support for sports at Tata Steel dates back nearly a century and is part of its culture. Tata Steel has been one of the foremost corporate promoters of Indian sports – having built academies for football, archery, athletics, hockey and sport climbing. In addition to the Jamshedpur Run-a-thon, Tata Steel has over the years championed the cause of fitness through several Run properties like Tata Steel Kolkata 25K Run, Bhubaneswar Half Marathon and Noamundi Run-a-thon across its operating locations to engage with the community through Sports.
The next corporate run is scheduled at Noamundi on November 27, 2022 and at Kolkata on December 18, 2022.
